THE PATH FROM PHOTO TO PLACE

Find the story behind the scenery.

A photo, a few visual clues, and a new place on your map.

Pick your photo

Upload a travel memory, a landmark, or that beautiful place you’ve been trying to find.

2

Let us connect the dots

GOOD TO KNOW

A few answers for curious minds.

Everything to know before your next discovery.

How does Where is this place work?

We first read any GPS coordinates saved in the photo’s EXIF metadata. If there are none, a vision AI model analyzes buildings, signs, vegetation and landscape to estimate where it was taken, and returns possible locations and coordinates for you to verify on a map.

How accurate is the location estimate?

Accuracy depends on the photo. Recognizable landmarks and clear outdoor scenes often give more useful clues than indoor, blurry, or heavily edited images. A result is an estimate, not a confirmed address. Always verify it independently.

Does my photo need GPS metadata?

No. GPS metadata is used when it exists, but the AI can also predict a location from the image itself. For better results, choose an image with distinctive architecture, scenery, or readable signs.

What happens to my uploaded photo?

GPS metadata is read on our server. Photos without GPS data are sent to our AI provider (OpenRouter, which routes them to the model vendor) for analysis. This website does not save your photo or result in a database. Unlock payments are handled by Stripe. Only upload images you have permission to use.

Which photos can I upload?

Upload one JPG, PNG, or WebP image up to 10 MB. Clear photos of streets, landmarks, buildings, and outdoor landscapes work best. You can use the photo location finder on desktop or mobile.
